Let’s start with Italian cuisine, perhaps one of the most popular ones around the globe. There are several types of Italian restaurants one can visit in Montreal.  A café-bar is the place where you can grab a quick bite or breakfast, excellent Italian coffee or something traditional but smaller (like a quick snack), for instance: brioche, spuntini, tramezzini, frittata, Panini…Then there are pizzerias, specialized for pizza-making. The Italian no.1 specialty is pizza – tasty, crunchy, and delicious, with various toppings and additions. Panninotecas are sandwich shops – selling sandwiches with mozzarella, tomato, smoked meat, olives and cheese. These sandwiches are tasty and healthy. Similar to pizzeria is spaghettaria, specialized in spaghetti-making, and there are a lot of those venues in Montreal. Finally, if you want an upscale menu and more premium atmosphere, you can visit a traditional Italian restaurant. However, if you want to feel real Italian atmosphere, you should visit a trattoria with a huge variety of meals and a bit more laid back feeling.

Montreal also has amazing Asian cuisine restaurants all over the city, and by Asian we mean Chinese, Japanese and Indian. Chinese and Indian food is cheaper than Japanese, and you will see two types of restaurants – take-away and regular ones. If you are busy and in a hurry, order via phone and just collect your meal in a take-out restaurant; they are cheap and the food is excellent. Note: Indian food is very hot, so don’t go wild with curry! Classical restaurants offer a better variety of meals, and they offer real, authentic traditional Asian atmosphere. For sushi and sashimi fans – Montreal offers a few great Japanese bars. Their food consists of raw seafood, vegetables, rice and noodles and is extremely healthy. Prices are a bit higher and the food is world-famous for a good reason – it is delicious!

Canadian food is originally developed from French cuisine, so if you would like to “Go French”, Montreal is the right place. French restaurants can be either very cheap or very classy with premium style, so be careful when you choose. Depending on the area, and hype, prices vary. French food includes meat, vegetables, great sauces and soups, and is served in smaller portions. An absolute must is original French wine and their amazing desserts.

Finally, if you decide to eat healthy, with vinegar, olive oil, raw vegetables and 1st class meat and fish – search for a good Greek restaurant in Montreal. There are a few good ones in the city centre offering superb food and great traditional drinks – metaxa, ouzo and retsina.

Chinese restaurants in Montreal – Little China in a big city

For people who visit Montreal, finding a good restaurant should not be a tough assignment. Canada is known for implementing various cuisines into their offer, which means that no matter which one you prefer, you will find something suitable to consume. Quality is usually very high, and food is very good in almost every restaurant in the city, but prices may vary. They depend on the quality and type of restaurant, its location in the city and the cuisine you are eating (French restaurants are, for instance, more expensive than the small Italian or Chinese ones).

Chinese food

If you particularly love Chinese cuisine, Montreal will live up to your expectations. Whether you love cosy restaurants where you can sit and chit-chat with your friends, or you prefer fast food corner shops and restaurants, this city offers a wide selection. Their food range is usually excellent, because these restaurants hire Chinese cooks and staff and offer original recipes, and authentic Chinese food.

There are three kinds of Chinese restaurants in Montreal. First are takeout restaurants, which mostly cater takeout orders and call-ins, and they usually deliver food to the customer’s address. They have lower prices, great domesticate food, and a menu with up to 20 dishes to choose from. Since they are not expensive, and they provide very tasty food, students adore them, as do tourists and even business people (who like to stop by on their way home). Delivery is another great aspect which makes these Chinese restaurants very popular.

The second type of Chinese restaurant in Montreal includes buffet restaurants. They serve food (again, mostly 20 and more dishes) in a buffet manner, and are usually “all you can eat” kind of restaurants. That means that you pay a certain smaller amount and eat as much as you wish from the buffet. This kind of Chinese restaurant became extremely popular during the nineties all over the world. Food selection varies from outlet to outlet.

The third kind of restaurant serving Chinese food in Montreal are regular restaurants with a menu, where you come, order and eat from a huge on-menu selection. These are slightly more expensive restaurants (in the range of Chinese restaurants) and they offer excellent service and high quality food. These kinds of restaurants are especially popular among older clientele, business people and tourists.

A typical menu in Chinese restaurants includes a lot of vegetables, like carrots and tomatoes. The favourite side dish (traditionally eaten with every meal) is rice. Chinese chefs often use leafy vegetables too, and meals with it are bok choy and kai-lan. They also love to use different kinds of meat (chicken, veal, beef, even pork) and of course – different seafood (salmon, shrimps). Dishes are prepared quickly and easily and are usually stir fried, pan fried or deep fried, and the main cooking tool is a wok.

After your delicious meal, do not miss the opportunity to open your fortune cookie and see what is written in the stars for you. Every Chinese restaurant in Montreal will give you that pleasure!
