Canada’s second largest city is very well-organized and offers a great variety of tastes, cuisines, drinks and of course prices for all that. Also, you know the golden rule of travelling – whenever you travel abroad, you should eat like locals do! In Montreal that is a safe bet, because delicious food can be found on every corner.
If you love Italian cuisine, you will simply fall in love with small traditional Italian restaurants all over Montreal, with great food, brilliant wines, good prices and cosy and pleasant atmosphere. There are different kinds of Italian restaurants to choose from, and we will now describe them all to you, to make your future choice easier!

Bar/Caffe – a place where you can eat something light or have a nice snack, or breakfast. These venues are famous for their coffee (no one makes it better than Italians), and snacks such as brioche, Panini, spuntini, frittata, tramezzini etc. In Montreal, there are several great bars where you can stop by on your way to work, or to have a light tasty breakfast.
Panninoteca is a term for sandwich shop. Italian sandwiches include mozzarella cheese, tomato, smoked ham and olives, and are very tasty, and healthy (with premium ingredients).
Pizzerias are located all over Montreal. Just like the name says, they are famous for their crunchy, tasty, delicious pizzas, with various toppings you can choose from. Pizza is the Italian no.1 specialty.
Similar to a pizzeria is the spaghetteria. In restaurants specialized for spaghetti-making, you can enjoy a full range of toppings and a great selection of Italian wines.
Ristorante is the name for a traditional Italian restaurant, and there is a huge number of them in Montreal. Ristorantes offer different meals (quite an upscale menu), and have slightly higher prices.
Finally, you will notice the sign Trattoria in Montreal everywhere. It is a name for dining venue (where usually all members of the family work) with lower prices, and informal atmosphere compared to restaurants. Montreal has a few excellent ones!
If you want to actually eat like Italians do, we will present you the traditional Italian way of dining. First you should order Aperitivo (a drinking appetizer such as Campari, Cinzano, Prosecco, and Vermouth) and drink it before you start eating. Then comes Antipasto, which in Italian means – before the meal. Appetizers can be served hot and cold. The first course is called Primo in Italian, and consists of a hot dish (Italians always order pasta or risotto, or gnocchi, or soup/potage). Next thing you should order is the second course – Secondo. It is a main meal and usually includes meat or fish. A side dish you combine with the main course is called Contorno (usually Italians order cooked vegetables, salads etc). Next on your table: cheese and fruits or formaggio e frutta, and that is the first dessert. Main dessert comes after, and it usually contains cakes and cookies. After desserts, Italians order coffee, and finally at the end of the evening – Digestivo (digestive), liquors like amaro, limoncello, sambuca etc.
