French restaurants in Montreal

Thursday, December 17th, 2009

Montreal is the second largest city in Canada, and the one that’s been influenced strongly by France in the past (for instance, Montreal’s official language is French, and more than 57% of the population uses it). French food is almost recognized as their local, domestic cuisine, so if you are in the mood for a quality French meal, Montreal will offer a top selection.

There are several types of restaurants serving French cuisine, and they offer different meals, different wines, and different service and, of course, their meal prices vary, from very cheap to extremely expensive. Here are the types of French restaurant you can choose from in Montreal.

  1. French restaurants – they are open 6 days a week and can have different price range and food offer. Customers select their order from a printed menu, and can choose from regional French menus to a modern styled food. French restaurants offer huge food selection to both meat eaters and vegetarians. The selection of wine is exquisite, from regular priced bottles to very very expensive ones.
  2. French bistro or bistrot – there is a huge variety in Montreal. These venues are smaller than a restaurant and their menu is written on the board in front of the menu, or will be told to you once you sit to order. The quality of food is also exquisite, but the atmosphere is looser, and more laid back than in the fancy restaurant. Most famous Dishes bistros are: coq au vin and confit de canard.
  3. The next kind of French cuisine restaurants in Montreal is Brasserie (which in French means brewery). These are smaller venues and they mostly serve wines and (uncommon in French bars) beer. Brasseries are less expensive and known for great selection of seafood and sauerkraut. Brasseries are open all day, and they offer the same dishes every day (with minor variations recommended by the cook).
  4. The French bar is another establishment very well-respected in Montreal. There are many different and they offer drinks (wines primarily) and finger food, starters, croissants and appetizers. These are not classical food places and you don’t come here to eat, but to have few drinks with your friends, and have a quick bite while doing so.

French cuisine is, as we mentioned, very popular in Montreal. It is tasty and known for small portions of food. French people never eat one big meal. Instead, they rather order a few things and then mix them together in combination with some excellent wine. Keep in mind that if you want to have a full treatment, you need to taste at least 3 different wine types – first one before meal, second while you are eating, and third kind with your desserts.

Also, keep in mind that prices in Montreal restaurants serving French food varies and depends on the location, type of restaurant, the venue’s prestige and of course, the kind of meal you have ordered. French cuisine is probably the tastiest one, but is certainly not the cheapest one in Montreal.

In a class all by itself, Montreal Lebanese restaurants are a great place to grab a bite to eat. They are full of flavor, and atmosphere. The food here is fresh, and prepared to perfection by very talented chefs. They use very specific oils, seasonings, and techniques to whip up some delightful dishes for you to enjoy. It is a very popular cuisine among tourists, and residents of Montreal. People will travel from all around the world just to get a little taste of the one of a kind food. They use special ingredients exclusively for these wonderful dishes.

When it comes to Montreal Lebanese restaurants there are a few ingredients that come standard in the meals. Just like in an authentic restaurant cooks use fruits, vegetables, and fish that are found fresh in Montreal. The thing that truly sets these restaurants apart is their unique use of spices. They have a special way of blending different flavors together into every single dish that they serve you. One of the spices that they love to use is garlic. It complements the fresh seafood that they serve, in a way that everyone really enjoys. At one of these great establishments you can choose to have your vegetables raw, or cooked lightly in an olive oil mixture. The reason that they choose to use olive oil is that it helps to absorb the fat off of the poultry. Lemon juice is also used to enhance the flavor of the dishes that are commonly served in this type of restaurant in the city. They use the juice on lamb and seafood dishes. The lemon brings out the natural flavorings in the meat, and seafood. It can also be used as a tenderizer that will make the food just melt away in your mouth. Two of the most common ways for the chefs to cook the food in a Montreal Lebanese restaurant, is to grill it, or sauté it. The idea behind these two particular methods of preparation is that they want to preserve the earthy flavors of the food. This particular type of food is a dining experience that you will never be able to forget. It will be some of the most delightful food that you have ever tasted, and very few diners ever leave unhappy.

It is a healthy way to eat without having to give any of the flavors up. The other thing that you can find in a Montreal Lebanese restaurant is the atmosphere that goes along with the great meal. Though the atmosphere of the restaurants tends to change from day to night, they are both a great time to have an incredible bite to eat. You might choose to go and set down for a quite evening, or you can just slip in for the great food on the go. If you go to one of these establishments for dinner, then you should try their exquisite homemade breads with hummus. Any choice that you make is sure to be pleasing to your mouth.

There are different kinds of Italian restaurants to choose from, and we will now describe them all to you, to make your future choice easier!

Italian restaurants in Montreal

Bar/Caffe – a place where you can eat something light or have a nice snack, or breakfast. These venues are famous for their coffee (no one makes it better than Italians), and snacks such as brioche, Panini, spuntini, frittata, tramezzini etc. In Montreal, there are several great bars where you can stop by on your way to work, or to have a light tasty breakfast.

Panninoteca is a term for sandwich shop. Italian sandwiches include mozzarella cheese, tomato, smoked ham and olives, and are very tasty, and healthy (with premium ingredients).

Pizzerias are located all over Montreal. Just like the name says, they are famous for their crunchy, tasty, delicious pizzas, with various toppings you can choose from. Pizza is the Italian no.1 specialty.

Similar to a pizzeria is the spaghetteria. In restaurants specialized for spaghetti-making, you can enjoy a full range of toppings and a great selection of Italian wines.

Ristorante is the name for a traditional Italian restaurant, and there is a huge number of them in Montreal. Ristorantes offer different meals (quite an upscale menu), and have slightly higher prices.

Finally, you will notice the sign Trattoria in Montreal everywhere. It is a name for dining venue (where usually all members of the family work) with lower prices, and informal atmosphere compared to restaurants. Montreal has a few excellent ones!

If you want to actually eat like Italians do, we will present you the traditional Italian way of dining. First you should order Aperitivo (a drinking appetizer such as Campari, Cinzano, Prosecco, and Vermouth) and drink it before you start eating. Then comes Antipasto, which in Italian means – before the meal. Appetizers can be served hot and cold. The first course is called Primo in Italian, and consists of a hot dish (Italians always order pasta or risotto, or gnocchi, or soup/potage). Next thing you should order is the second course – Secondo. It is a main meal and usually includes meat or fish. A side dish you combine with the main course is called Contorno (usually Italians order cooked vegetables, salads etc). Next on your table: cheese and fruits or formaggio e frutta, and that is the first dessert. Main dessert comes after, and it usually contains cakes and cookies. After desserts, Italians order coffee, and finally at the end of the evening – Digestivo (digestive), liquors like amaro, limoncello, sambuca etc.

When it comes to Asian cuisine, you will not be disappointed. We will tell you more about Chinese, Japanese and Indian cuisine, to be found in this great city, and you just have to read through and afterwards decide where you want to take a bite.

Let’s start with Chinese cuisine. In Montreal, you will find three types of Chinese restaurant: take-out, buffet and traditional restaurants. Take-out restaurants cater take-out orders, or deliver to your address. They are very cheap and work 24/7 usually. Buffets became very popular in the past decade. They serve more than 20 traditional Chinese dishes every day, and usually have the “all you can eat” offer. That means you come in, pay a few dollars and eat as much as you want from the buffet. The third kind, traditional, covers regular Chinese restaurants with the best tasty food, and huge variety of meals you can choose from, and are slightly more expensive then buffet and take-out restaurants.

If you are in Montreal and you crave sushi and sashimi, It’s the best place to look for. Montreal has several exquisite sushi bars, and restaurants with Japanese menus. Japanese cuisine became extremely popular in Canada during the 90’s and the biggest restaurants are located in Vancouver, Toronto and Montreal. There are two kinds of Japanese restaurant: take-out corner shops and sushi bars/restaurants. Apart from the raw fish Japanese cuisine is famous for, you can also try a variety of meals consisting of rice, beans, eggs, fruit, noodles, mushrooms, soy products, various vegetables, seafood, fish, mammals, shellfish, seaweed etc. Japanese cuisine is very healthy!

Finally, an Asian cuisine we strongly recommend in Montreal is hot & spicy – Indian. This is one of the most popular international cuisines around the world. Indian food is hot, spicy, and very tasty, including curry as the main ingredient. Montreal has a few exclusive Indian restaurants and also several smaller ones, where you can take-away your order and eat at home. Usually the chef and the whole staff are natives of India, therefore everything they make and serve is 100% authentic. Meals you shouldn’t miss are: butter chicken (world famous) originally known as Murgh Makhani, chicken tikka, ragada, Daal puri, poha and kofta. Everything is made of vegetables, meat, herbs and with lots of spices.

In Montreal, the only dilemma you might have is where to go, because everything you need can be found in this city. Carefully choose from a huge variety of cuisines and have fun exploring new tastes!
